Puppet Fringe Festival 2023

The 3rd International Puppet Fringe Festival, honoring Ralph Lee in loving memory, took place in New York City in various locations on the Lower East Side August 9-13, 2023. The semi-annual festival is produced by Teatro SEA, Grupo Morán, and The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural & Education Center. Mettawee’s Ralph Lee (posthumously) and Casey Compton  were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards at the festival in celebration of their immense contributions to the world of theater and puppetry.

Several events featuring Ralph Lee and the Mettawee River Theatre Company took place at the Clemente Center:

– August 9, opening Halloween in August procession, followed by ceremony

– August 12, roundtable discussion with several Mettawee company members, including Managing Director, Casey Compton

– August 9-13, retrospective exhibit of photographs of Ralph Lee’s work

– August 9-31*, retrospective exhibit of selected masks and puppets *extended through the end of August!

Brendan Schweda also performed an excerpt from a Mettawee show, Barnacle Bill the Husband (1989), during the late night “Microtheater” events.
